Bombers believed when no~one else seemed to

Waaia`s bulging premiership cabinet claimed a new addition on Saturday when the Bombers upset Tungamah in the Picola District Football League grand final.
While the Bears were raging pre~game favourites heading into Saturday`s highly anticipated clash, the Bombers never~ say~ die attitude shone through in the end as they claimed a 12.13 (85) to 9.12 (66) victory.
The premiership Waaia`s 10th in the league and according to coach Mick Cleeland, one of its most impressive.
`It was a real fighting victory,` Cleeland said.
` No~one gave us a chance, but we always thought we were good enough`.
`There was a real self~ belief amongst the playing group and that was a telling factoring the end.`
In front of more than 2000 spectators at Katunga, the Bombers began the match full of run as ruckman Tony Onley supplied the likes of David and Steve Gilmour with first use of the ball.
With both sides looking to settle, it was Waaia which drew first blood as it kicked three of the first four goals of the match.
`It was a good start,` Cleeland said.
`There was a fair bit going on out there, so it was good that we could pile a couple of goals.`
By quarter~time the Bombers had opened up a 10 point lead, but the Bears were just starting to find their feet.
In the second term, and with their nerves settled, the Bears` potent forward line began to fire.
Nayce Lowe and Tom Wren won more than their fair share of the contested football across half~forward, while century goalkicker Peter Mecheda kicked three of his four majors for the game.
A steadying goal to Waaia near the end of the first half, ensured the Bears` lead was restricted to seven points at the main change.
With the game up for grabs, the Bombers made their move in the third term as they piled on the pressure.
Monopolising possession, the Gilmours`s, Dave Daniel and Matt Cason took their games to another level as they tore the Bears` apart.
A stunning running goal to Cason sealed a seven goal~to~one third term.
`We knew we had to play our own game,` Cleeland said.
`In the first half we probably fell into the trap of concentrating on them a little to much and not concentrating on our own style.
`In the third quarter we just threw caution to the wind.`
Despite a spirited fourth quarter showing by the Bears, the Bombers had the game done and dusted by the final change as they ran out the clock.
`It`s extremely disappointing,` Tungamah coach David Putamorsi said.
`We didn`t play anywhere near to our potential …. But full credit must go to Waaia.
`Maybe they didn`t let us play near our potential.`
After finishing their season last year with 15 losses and just three wins, the Bears had come within an inch of claiming a fairytale victory.
But as fate would have it on Saturday, their Cinderella story wasn`t to be.
`It`s a difficult loss to swallow,` Putamorsi said.
`I just wish we could have put up a better showing….but there`s always next year. That`s what you`ve got to grip to I suppose.`
Daniel`s week now suddenly heaps better
Dave Daniel`s week from hell turned full circle on Saturday when the Waaia on~baller was ajudged best afield in the Picola District Football League grand final.
Daniel, who was forced to face the league`s independent tribunal last Wednesday night, was fortunate enough to escape suspension before playing the game of his life in the Bomber`s premiership win.
`I had my heart in my mouth all week,` Daniel said.
`It was really nerve racking.
`I knew I hadn`t done anything wrong, but you just never know.`
With his brothers Matt and Ben alongside him in battle, Daniel swept aside the controversy as he reigned supreme in the Bomber`s midfield.
Running with power and purpose, the 24 year~ old collected possessions at will as he smashed the game wide open.
`I didn`t let anything get to me,` Daniel said.
`I just wanted to win.
`I couldn`t care less if I didn`t get a kick as long as we still won.
`It`s just fantastic.`
